The downtown area, featuring a large marina and a charming historical
district, is undergoing a renaissance of nightlife and apartment living.
The waterfront Harborside Convention Center and Centennial Park are host
to numerous community events.
Across the river from Fort Myers, sprawling
Cape Coral is accessible by four bridges. A short drive on McGregor
Boulevard or Summerlin Road takes you to the barrier islands of Sanibel,
Captiva, and Fort Myers Beach.
The Fort Myers area has been called a
"water wonderland" due to its numerous bays, lakes, rivers,
and canals. Boating is the recreation of choice. Virtually all of the
waterways in the area provide access to the Gulf of Mexico.
Golfing is also high on the recreation list, with
over 30 courses of all skill levels.
The area is the site of the state's newest
university, Florida Gulf Coast University, off I-75 in southern Lee
County. Edison Community College on College Parkway, opened in the
1960's. It is a growing school with a scenic campus.
